Developers of the 450-unit Cypress Creek subdivision hope to have an 18-hole golf course on the south side of the Route 10 bypass in operation by the fall. Plans for the single-family subdivision have been approved by the county.
Richmond Steel has been joined in the Isle of Wight Industrial Park on Route 10 by Markham Vaults, a company that makes burial vaults.
Construction continues on Jericho Estates, an upscale development of 21 custom-built homes on 3-acre lots along Jericho Road in Smithfield.
The new $9 million Windsor Elementary School on Route 258, between Isle of Wight Courthouse and Windsor, will soon be under construction. It is scheduled to open in the summer of 1998.
A 131-home subdivision in the Carrollton area at the foot of the James River Bridge, first approved by the county in the 1970s, may move forward during the coming year.

In Smithfield, call 357-4393 to determine which school your child should attend. In Windsor, call 242-4400, and in Franklin, 569-8605.
To register, bring your child’s immunization records, birth certificate, Social Security number, physical examination record and any previous school records. A child entering kindergarten for the first time or transferring from another state must have a second measles-mumps-rubella vaccine. To enroll in kindergarten, a child must turn 5 by Sept. 30 of the school year.

Dog and cat license: Licenses can be obtained from the county treasurer’s office. Licenses for females cost $7. Owners must bring a rabies certificate. If your dog or cat is male or has been spayed, the license is $5. Kennel licenses for dogs kept in pens cost $30 for five to 19 dogs; $35 for 20 to 29 dogs; $40 for 30 to 39 dogs; and $45 for 40 to 49 dogs; $50 for more than 50 dogs. Garbage collection: Isle of Wight County has no door-to-door garbage collection. Residents can take their garbage to trash container sites located throughout the county. Containers are for household trash only. Other refuse should be taken to the transfer station. Library card: Library cards may be obtained at any of the seven area public libraries. The Isle of Wight County/Smithfield Branch Library is located at 255 James St., Smithfield. Marriage license: Licenses can be obtained at the county clerk’s office. Marriage licenses cost $30, and both parties must be present. If a party applying is under 18 years old, he or she must be accompanied by a parent. No blood tests, physicals or waiting periods required. Call 365-6233.

Voter registration: All residents who are not currently registered to vote in the state must fill out a voter registration form at the county registrar’s office at the Isle of Wight Courthouse complex.
